Tree Mineral Deficiency – Dealing with Chlorosis
Chlorosis is one of the most common types of mineral deficiencies impacting trees in Lago Vista. This ailment is caused by a lack of iron, resulting in an anemic tree that not only looks unsightly but also suffers from poorer growth.
Other types of tree mineral deficiencies include manganese and zinc, each causing blotches to appear on leaves and possible foliage underdevelopment.
How We Treat It
The good news is that this is one of the easiest problems for our tree surgeons to fix. They simply inject the tree with a special formula that provides additional minerals to restore the deficiency for long-term well-being of the tree.
We deliver this directly into the tree’s vascular system, so results take as little as four weeks to show!
Good Guys Tree Service provides certified arborist consultations, full treatment programs and complete tree maintenance services. Contact us today to schedule an appointment!
Fungal & Bacterial Infections That Need a Tree Doctor
If you notice some strange markings on the leaves of your tree in Lago Vista, then there is a good chance it is suffering from a fungal or bacterial infection. These infections tend to show symptoms on the leaves of the tree, so if there is a problem here it may be related to a fungus or bacteria attacking the tree.
Signs of fungal infections on trees in Lago Vista include:
- Spots
- Streaks
- Mold
- Warping
- Tips of twigs appearing dead
Signs of bacterial infections on trees in Lago Vista include:
- Blight
- Shriveling
- Scorching
- Tips appearing burnt
Not sure if this is the problem affecting your tree leaves? Then let one of our tree surgeons analyze the tree to determine the cause of the infection!
How We Treat It
A different treatment is provided based on the type of infection. For example, a fungal infection is relatively easy to treat using a systemic fungicide. These are either injected or sprayed to quickly kill the fungal infection and prevent its spread to other parts of the tree or nearby trees.
For a bacterial infection, a different treatment is used depending on what the cause of the infection is. For example, most bacterial infections are caused by environmental factors, such as trees being too closely planted and not getting enough airflow.
In the above instance, we prune the trees to ensure they are a safe distance. Other treatments are used depending on environmental causes, with common causes including insect infestations and poor drainage.
Tree Growths
Trees in Lago Vista come with some odd-shaped growths on them, and these are mostly nothing to worry about. Any growth on branches and the upper areas of the tree should be fine, with common tree growths like conks and brackets not doing any harm when found in these spots.
However, if growths are present on the main trunk of the tree then there could be a major problem on your hands. This is a serious issue because the inside of the tree is effectively dead, feeding the fungal infection causing the growths on the outside.
Eventually, the growths absorb all the goodness from the tree, causing it to die off to the point where the tree becomes unstable and will fall over. This presents obvious safety risks, so it is best to remove the tree entirely before it becomes too much of a risk.
Tree Wound Care
All trees get damaged throughout their lives, as it is simply part of nature. Whether it is wild weather conditions, human involvement, or down to wildlife, trees are going to suffer damage that makes them look worse for wear.
While you may be concerned, most tree wounds are not a serious issue. Even those large gashes on the trunk will eventually heal, as trees have an incredible ability to heal themselves of even the most serious damage.
At most, we do some minor maintenance to provide the tree with the perfect conditions to heal itself. After this, we let the tree do all the hard work – it can do a far better job than we ever could healing it!
Insect Infestation
In most cases, insects come and go from trees without causing any sort of damage. However, there are some trees in Lago Vista suffering from severe insect infestations, and these can wreak all kinds of havoc for the tree.
Common problems with insect infested trees in Lago Vista include:
- Foliage Loss: Insects naturally eat leaves, but too many can disrupt the natural balance by removing too much foliage at once, causing some serious problems for the tree. If insects are causing foliage loss of 10-15% then they must be removed.
- Burrowed Wood: Wood burrowing insects are a major pest, eating away at the wood to the point where the tree cannot recover. Signs of this include wood bark shavings on the ground and woodpecker markings, the latter indicating beetle larva inside the bark.
- Root Damage: Tree root systems are teeming with microorganisms, yet too many of certain insects may cause root damage. This is a big problem as damaged roots prevent proper nutritional distribution, greatly impacting the health and growth of the tree.
How We Treat It
There is an insecticide for all kinds of insects that attack trees, so finding the appropriate solution is easy enough. The main difficulty is determining the type of insect, although our expert arborists can identify them easily.
Once we know exactly the type of insect, we use the right insecticide to eliminate their presence, either through soil drenching or injection. If needed, we offer a treatment for the tree to aid its recovery from the damage the insects caused.
Soil Compaction
Soil naturally compacts around the base of a tree, especially if lots of people and objects move around the area. Eventually, soil becomes so compact that it is difficult for air, moisture, and nutrients to reach all the roots, causing poor root development and a less healthy and vigorous tree.
Soil compaction is a big problem for many trees in Lago Vista, yet not many people are aware there is a problem because it remains out of sight. Thankfully, we know the best ways to determine soil compaction and how severe the problem is, with suitable solutions available from our tree surgeons.
How We Treat It
Soil compaction requires a multi-step treatment, starting off with a process known as vertical mulching. This involves us digging a grid of narrow holes throughout the soil at the base of the tree using a special auger.
We drill perfect sized holes that go just deep enough to remove the compaction, allowing more air, moisture, and nutrients to flow through the root system. To ensure the dirt doesn’t refill the hole and cause the same issues, we use a blend of pea gravel and peat moss to refill the hole without causing any compaction.
The next step involves creating a mulched and bordered landscaping bed around the base of the tree. These are common in many parks and public areas, ensuring good drainage and airflow without any compaction.
Some places may need a fence installed though, as too much foot traffic eliminates the benefits of the landscaping bed. These are mostly for trees in public areas like parks and playgrounds though.
